“Inspired by life” and “Knowledge is power” are the motto’s of Manipal University and the new course in Manipal this year stands testament of that .Yes! We are talking about the latest addition, our brand new engineering department. Engineering is not a new subject in Manipal academia. In fact for those who are not aware; Manipal has a 50year experience in engineering. Manipal Institute of Technology or the more familiar MIT was established in 1957 founded by Dr T.M.A.Pai. Hence it was due time that the course be offered in Manipal Dubai as well. Manipal Dubai officially announced its engineering courses in March 2008. The response received was phenomenal. The new courses offered are: B.E. Civil Engineering B.E. Mechanical Engineering B.E. Mechatronics Engineering B.E. Electronics and Communication B.E Instrumentation and control Engineering “The talks for establishing the course started in January 2008 but really started taking form around April” informs Dr Raghuvir Pai, the new head of the department (HOD) for engineering. Dr Raghuvir has several credentials to his name. He is in fact a former student and a Professor of MIT and later on took the place as a Joint Director of the same institution. He is also the Director of International center for Applied Sciences. He is joined by an extremely credited faculty as well, namely: a) Dr. Raghuvir Pai [Graphics] b) Dr. Suhas.P.Veetil [Physics] c) Mr. T.M.Matthai [Civil Engineering] d) Ms. Preetha Sreekumar [Electronic Engineering] e) Dr. Raghavendra [Mathematics] f) Mr. Vijayalumar.R. [Chemistry] g) Ms. Nusrat Ahmed [English] h) Dr. Faiz Ishaq [Computer Science] The first engineering batch consists of 85 students .The first day started out with a small orientation where the Director, Dr.Ramjee spoke to the students, followed by a talk by their HOD. There’s been a lot of excitement considering the course offered in Mechatronics, as it is a new modern take on engineering, combining both mechanical and electronic work. Besides this, the civil and mechanical engineering courses have also received a good response. Maazen Mulla, first year engineering student says “I am really exited about the course. I am doing Mechatronics which is a new subject but has a lot of scope.” The department also consist of state of the art labs, as engineering consist more of a practical application We welcome our new department, its faculty and our fellow students. Cheers and all the best!!!! We look forward to more reporting about our latest department. by Laureena Quadros & Thomas James
