Standing up in front of a big audience to hypnotize them with your speech is not a talent everyone possesses. The 4th Annual Wollongong Cup Public Speaking Competition 2009 had many students and their Universities participating to inform, influence and entertain by their public speaking skills. There were six different categories in the Competition, which were Public Address, Storytelling Traditional, Storytelling Original, Impromptu, Radio Address and Extemporaneous. Participating in all the categories, Manipal University Dubai were the 3rd runners up along with BITS-Pilani. University of Wollongong Dubai scored the place of 2nd runners up while American University of Sharjah secured the Overall Champions Trophy. Students of Manipal University (MU) won in three categories. Akanksha Singh from MU, who participated for storytelling traditional, managed to attain the third position by enchanting the audience with her story “The Scarecrow Knight”. However, Farhina Fakhir, a student of UOWD had swept the audience and judges to a different world with her story “The Vampire visits the Dentist” securing the first position. Hemal Vaya achieved the second position for MU in Public Address category with her speech on “Booming Battle: Human Values against economic development”. The first prize was taken by Hamzeh al-Fuqha’ from AUS for his speech on “Tolerance versus Prejudice”. Shining with the first position trophy in the impromptu category was Mohammed Ali from MU for his hot and cold “Temperature” insight. Piyush Singh from BITS Pilani followed him with the second position and Parvathi Radhakrishnan from UOWD with the third position. 104.8 Channel 4 FM sponsored the Radio Address category while Choithram supermarket sponsored the Impromptu and Extemporaneous categories. Both the story telling categories were sponsored by Blue Sea. A total of 11 Universities had participated in the 4th Annual Wollongong Cup Public Speaking Competition. Other than UOWD itself, the other universities present where, Canadian University of Dubai, Gulf Medical University, Skyline University, American University of Dubai, American University of Sharjah, International Institute of Technology and Management, BITS-Pilani, Manipal University, BITS-Ranchi and SZABIST. -- By Heena G. and Saira Kasim
