The second annual edition of 2010 Student Photography exhibition hosted by Murdoch University, Dubai and organized by the Dubai International Academic City, Student Hub was held on 13th May 2010. Shilpa Ramesh, a student from Manipal University, won the third place in the student photography competition.
The competition was open to UAE high school students, UAE University Students and the Murdoch University Media Students. The theme of the competition was ‘Street photography: A world in a city’, which aims to showcase diversity in the UAE.
"Street photography is a type of documentary photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places. A good street photograph does not always depend on the photographer's creativity and technical knowledge, but it often requires a bit of luck to capture a once-in-a-lifetime event that may occur in a blink of an eye," said Mr. John Grainger, Dean of Murdoch University, Dubai.
The jury consisted of four renowned photographers namely, Clint Mclean (Photographer and Photo editor of National Magazine, based in Abu Dhabi), David Taylor Bramley (Award winning worldwide advertising and commercial photography), Celia Peterson (Photographer of National Geographic and Arabian eye) and Lucy Huggins (Photographer at Bareface Team).
The selection of the shortlisted photographs for the exhibition and the awarded winners were carefully examined by the judges. Celia Peterson elaborated on the judging selection where Round one, consisted of ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ of the photograph followed by a selection where two out of four judges had to agree to the photograph. Round two marked the photographs on the basis of a 20 point scheme which enabled the selection of the top 10 and ultimately the three winners.
“We are proud to have a student from our University, securing a place at the Murdoch Photography Competition this year,” said Ms. Uma Prasad, the Student Services Coordinator at Manipal University, Dubai.
‘We are even more pleased that Shilpa, being a management student has taken an initiative and pursued her hobby of photography at a professional level and for that we congratulate her and wish her best of luck in the future.’ she added.
Ms. Shilpa Ramesh, who graduated from Manipal University, Dubai in 2009, is currently pursuing CMA Accounts. Shilpa recounts that when she submitted the photograph for the competition she didn’t expect to win. “I really didn’t expect it, but I must say that photography has always been my passion,” said Shilpa clearly thrilled by her win.
Celia Peterson, one of the three judges, said, “Shilpa’s entry was quirky, humorous and something we all enjoyed seeing.”
Preceding Shilpa’s winning entry, Abhinav Sharma (BITS Pilani, Dubai) and Rohan Joseph (Murdoch University, Dubai) bagged the first and second places respectively.
Concurrently, Ms. Jyoti Mansukhani, a second year student from the Department of Media and Communications was also shortlisted under the same category.
