The 2nd Manipal Conference on Technology Management (MCTM) organized by the Department of Information Technology, Manipal University Dubai was held on March 24 at the Dusit Thani hotel, Dubai. Invited guest speakers included Dr. Eesa M. Bastaki, Mr. Salem Rihani, Dr. Usman Zafar and Khazi Mohammed Akram.

The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Eesa Bastaki, Chair of MCTM 2011 and Chair of IEEE UAE, where he encouraged Manipal University to set up the first IEEE Technology Management Council for students in UAE. IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is one of the world's largest professional association for the advancement of technology. IEEE currently has fourteen branches and more than 1800 student members in UAE.

Dr. Usman Zafar, Managing Director of Al TAQNYAH business solutions spoke about ‘e-transformation in the public sector’ and addressed the need for companies’ involvement to update university students with current technology. Mr. Salem Rihani, Deputy Director General of ICDL GCC talked about e-government as a platform for ideas to be shared and heard while enabling transparency. The last keynote speaker, Eng. Ali Alamadi, aeCERT threat analyst noted that “Identity theft is one of the biggest threats in the world” and shared his own humorous insights on the threats faced by banks, companies and common civilians who log into Facebook all the time. All keynote speakers shared interesting and thought provoking views and topics relevant to their field of technology management.

The keynote speeches were followed by research paper presentations which were accepted on basis of double blind peer review. These papers included submissions from Zayed University, Manipal University Dubai, BITS Pilani Dubai, University of Pune, Computer College Dubai and National Bonds. Ten minutes were allotted for each presentation followed by five minutes for Q&A sessions. 

A workshop based on Information Security was organized after the paper presentations. Mr. Khazi Akram, General Manager, RAS Infotech explained the different levels of Information Security Threat and Management of Security Incident.

The Chairperson of the Department of Information Technology at Manipal University Dubai, Dr. S. K. Pandey said “The conference was organized with the aim to bring academicians, researchers and practitioners together to discuss techniques to bridge the gap between the theory and practice of technology management”.

MCMT 2011 concluded with certificates being distributed to the research paper presenters and a vote of thanks by Mrs. Sophia Rehman, Senior Lecturer, Dept. of Information Technology at Manipal University Dubai.
