Ginger Krieg
Dosier, assistant professor at American University of Sharjah and co-founder of
Verge Labs conducted an INDEX 2011 workshop highlighting how reusing recycled
materials has made it more efficient for the environment.
The workshop
educated students and guests on detailed mechanism of using Scanning Electronic
Microscope (SEM) through which one can research in-depth about different types
of material that can be combined to grow more of the desired material.
During the
speaker’s research, Dosier had experimented on how to form a brick by using
microorganisms, water and sand.
Attendees
gathered from different universities also participated in an experiment that
aimed to show how easy it is to recycle and reuse materials. Students were
divided into three flexible groups to work in a make-shift laboratory, which
enabled them to experiment using unconventional material and content in specific areas such as phase change, insulations and nano-technology. This illustrated
how choosing the right design materials such as location, climate,
availability, skills and applying sustainable materials could lead to lesser pollution
and efficient use of energy.
