             Watch the Opening of the Sharjah International Book Fair 2011 by Manipal TV


This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Sharjah International Book Fair, with emphasis on the tagline ‘for love of the written word’ that portrays the emirate’s strong vision to be at the center of knowledge and literature in the region.


The book fair was inaugurated by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and organized by the Department of Culture. The Sharjah International Book Fair is annually held at the Sharjah Expo Centre opening its doors to avid readers and visitors in the country on 16th November running continuously till the 26th of this month.

This eleven day event attracted around 750 publishing houses from various countries displaying books in different languages from 42 countries.

The Sharjah International Book Fair was declared as the India Focus Year for the event records an increase in export, wide exposure and the largest ever display of books from Indian authors for the first time in the Middle East. 

India Focus Year opened yesterday with chief guest, Mr. Vayalar Ravi, prominent Indian politician and currently the Union Cabinet Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs as he launched Nizhalayi Maranam, an autobiography of the late Mercy Ravi, congress leader and wife of Minister Valayar Ravi. 

Mr. Ravi commended the vision of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, for developing Sharjah into what it is today and shared a few words welcoming prestigious guests and visitors who attended to show their support while some personally received signed book copies.

“Knowledge serves as a purpose to influence the human minds and build a culture which can contribute towards the growing society," said Mr. Vayalar Ravi speaking exclusively to Manipal University Dubai as  he emphasized how this book fair can be beneficial to students and the need to inculcate cultural values to develop strong reading habits.


The India Focus invites many prominent Indian authors like Shobhaa De, Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Chetan Bhagat, Ruskin Bond, Vasudevan Nair, M Mukundan and Jaishree Misra who have been called onboard by DC Books, one of the largest Indian publishing houses to attend the Sharjah International book fair in coming week. This will be a great opportunity for visitors to interact and receive signed copies from their favorite authors.
